Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda)
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye and caustic soda, is a strong alkaline solution used in many industries, mostly as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents and as a drain cleaner. It is also used in a very wide array of pH adjustment applications, including food, consumer products, steel, corn milling and other chemical manufacturing. Most Sodium Hydroxide is manufacturered in electrolytic “cells”, as a part of chlor-alkali manufacturing. In this process, electicity is used to break the ionic bond of sodium chloride (NaCl, table salt) to form Sodium Hydroxide and Chlorine. Sodium Hydroxide is typically sold in industrial applications at 50% strength, though is sold at weaker solutions such at 25-30% to reduce the freezing point of the solution.

Rowell Chemical offers all three grades of Sodium Hydroxide, Diaphragm (or Commercial), Membrane and Rayon (Mercury cell). Any grade can be diluted to various customer specifications. Our product meets Food Chemical Codex standards, and is ANSI/NSF Standard 60 approved. Typically, Rowell Chemical sells bulk truckloads directly from our manufacturing point but totes, drums and smaller packages are also available. Product Stewardship and Safety Training
Rowell Chemical is an active member of The Chlorine Institute. The Chlorine Institute Inc. (CI) founded in 1924, is a technical trade association of companies that are involved in the safe production, distribution and use of chlorine, sodium and potassium hydroxides and sodium hypochlorite, and the distribution and use of hydrogen chloride. CI has developed pamphlets for sodium hydroxide users for users and handlers of the chemical, as well as various safety and technical documents.
