Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid)

Product Overview
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), also known as Muriatic Acid, is a strong acid solution used in many industries such as food, consumer products, steel, corn milling, well drilling and in other chemical manufacturing. It is also sold in retail applications as a brick cleaner, or for pH adjustment for swimming pools. Hydrochloric Acid is manufacturered either as a byproduct of CFC or Isocyanate manufacturing processes, or is produced in electrolytic “cells”, as a part of chlor-alkali manufacturing. In this process, electicity is used to break the ionic bond of sodium chloride (NaCl, table salt) to form Sodium Hydroxide and Chlorine. The chlorine is then reacted with hydrogen to form anhydrous HCl, which is then dissolved in water. Hydrochloric Acid is typically sold in industrial applications at 20 degree Baume (31%) or 22 Baume (35%) strengths. Weaker solutions such at 18 degree Baume are produced to reduce the fuming of the solution.

Rowell Chemical Hydrochloric Acid
Rowell Chemical purchases hydrochloric acid from several manufacturers, including Olin ChlorAlkali, BASF, OxyChem and ERCO Worldwide. Rowell Chemical offers all solution strengths to meet various customer specifications. Our product meets Food Chemical Codex standards. Typically, Rowell Chemical sells bulk railcars and truckloads directly from our distribution points but totes, drums and smaller packages are also available. See your Sales Representative for further information and pricing.

Product Stewardship and Safety Training
Rowell Chemical is an active member of The Chlorine Institute. The Chlorine Institute Inc. (CI) founded in 1924, is a technical trade association of companies that are involved in the safe production, distribution and use of chlorine, sodium and potassium hydroxides and sodium hypochlorite, and the distribution and use of hydrogen chloride. CI has developed pamphlets for hydrochloric acid users and handlers of the chemical, as well as various safety and technical documents. These products can be ordered and/or downloaded on CI’s website (http://www.chlorineinstitute.org). Rowell’s technical staff will also provide on-site safety training for customers, or can provide resources from our library of Safe handling pamphlets, videos and DVD’s.
